Hello CSA members,
We’ve been working hard here at Wobbly Cart the past week to get things harvested and out of the fields before the rain starts. Luckily the weather has been holding out. But now the sky is getting grey and it feels like a storm is on its way. It was 40 degrees outside this morning when we went out to harvest the vegetables for this week’s box; that’s cold! It’s getting to be time to break out the long johns and wool hats.
The wind started blowing and the rain threatened this afternoon as we were digging up and bagging the last of the potatoes in the field. We still have about 5 more rows to harvest. Then we can plant the fall cover crop. We estimated that we harvested about 10,000 pounds of potatoes. We harvested all of the winter squash last week during the hot weather and put it in the greenhouse to finish curing. We’ve been taste testing it and it’s almost ready. Be looking for some in your box in another week or two.
In this week’s box you’ll find:
Cauliflower Fingerling Potatoes
Red Butterhead Lettuce Swiss Chard
Purple Bell Pepper Red Sweet Pepper
Czech Black Hot Pepper Green Beans
Leek Sweet Onion
Eggplant Cherry Tomatoes
We are anticipating the first frost in the next few weeks; until then we have lots of peppers, eggplant and tomatoes to eat. With the cooler weather things are growing slower. Our tomato harvest has dropped drastically, but the Cherries are still producing and taste so good. The eggplants are staying pretty small these days, you’ll find 3 cute ones in your box ready to be sliced, drizzled with olive oil and baked in the oven until creamy. We are in the midst of a bumper crop of cauliflower right now. It’s so good raw are cooked. I love it sautéed in butter until golden brown, simple and delicious.
It’s hard to believe that there are only 3 weeks left in the 2009 CSA season. We still have Fall CSA Shares available. Sign up now to reserve you your spot.
